Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation

Minister's Profile:

H.E. Paul Mayom Akec began his education at the Rumbek Elementary School in 1961 and remained there until 1964. Thereafter, he joined Bussere Intermediate in 1964 but was interrupted by the first civil war. He resumed education in 1969 at Wau Intermediate School. Later, he joined Malakal Secondary School in 1972 and remained there until 1975. He joined the University of Khartoum in 1977 and graduated in 1981 with a law degree.

He began his working career as a Legal Assistant in 1981. He was promoted to a District Judge in 1982. He served in that position until he joined the SPLM/A in May 1986. He was commissioned 1st Lt. in the movement. He also served as Judicial Officer in the SPLA between 1986 and 1994 when he was appointed the Commissioner of Rumbek, a position he held until 2000. Between 2000 and 2001, he served as the Humanitarian Coordinator for SPLM in the Operation Lifeline Sudan (OLS). Thereafter, he joined the peace negotiations in 2002 and served until the CPA was signed in 2005. He was also part of the Khartoum Advance Mission in April 2005.

He rejoined the civil service in October 2005 as the legal advisor to the President. He served in this position until he was appointed Minister for Internal Affairs on 13th November 2006. He moved to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on 30th May 2009 where he served until he was appointed Minister for Irrigation and Water Resources on 21st June 2010. H.E. Paul Mayom Akec is married to three wives and is blessed with 12 children.
